Vaccha bracelet

Learn the age old practice from our ancestors to protect infants from various illness.

IMG_20160620_204026Today was an unusual day. At whatsapp, I shared Vaccha Bracelet to let parents know about this life saving herb for just born kids. In short time, say less than 6 hours, the parenting community jumped in and we ended up launching a product.

Vaccha, or popularly known as Vasambu in Tamil or sweet flag (English name) is one of the nine sacred herbs along with  honey and gold ash that was administered to children in ancient times. In Siddha text, they call it as, “Pillai marunthu” means Pediatric medicine.

In olden days, after 11th to 16th day naming ceremony, they tie this bracelet in babies both hands. Along with this, they also, tie a special rope around neck and hip, which we will blog later. In olden days, a gold string was beaten with vaccha. Daily mother would rub this vaccha gold stick on a sandalwood base and take the paste and apply a mark on babies top of the head, palm, and feet. Those are the osmotic areas. Our body absorbs the properties of the paste. This is  practiced in some parts of Kerala even now.

IMG_20160624_150000They tie this bracelet as a natural insecticide. When kids lick it, a small amount of medicine is taken into the body to protect it. This is an amazing herb that is known for its preventive and curative actions.

There is no age limit to use it, usually it can be used till the age of 5 and more. As kids at this age won’t lick their fingers.

This is also one  form of swarnaprashana called as Swarnavaccha, popularly sold in many ayurvedic shops. In case, if you are following swarnaprashana, Vaccha is already in the suvarnaprashan that your doctor has provided. In that case, you do not have to follow Swarnavaccha.

In olden days, they even used to make kajal out of it to apply on forehead, top of palm, foot of the child to protect from evil eyes. Since these areas are osmotic areas, it helps them from filtering impurities to get into the body. (imagine like the water filter using carbon to filter water) It is just not about the evil eyes, it has medical and spiritual reasons too. This improves their sleep and keep the mind calm for epilepsy kids.

Siddha and Ayurveda texts provides list of various benefits. To mention a few:

  • Epilepsy – Vasambu powder + honey. With only mother milk as main diet, this is effective
  • Indigestion or gas or diarrhoea – powder of Ink Nut + Long pepper + pepper + dry ginger + Vaccha + Asafoetida + Indian Atees
  • Cold or fever or pain in abdomen – Vaccha + Liquorice

Its root has even higher benefits. To mention few:

  • Strong Nervous system – Vaccha root is taken in less quantity.
  • Gas – root of vaccha is burnt and its ash is mixed with coconut oil and applied below the navel.
  • Vaccha in general helps in proper brain development, speech ability, eyesight. It also acts as neutralizer to toxins in the body.
It is very easy to make one by yourself.
  1. Start on a Pushya, Anuradha, Kettai Nakshatra day. Soak the vaccha up to 8 hours
  2. Clean the skin
  3. Cut it into small beads
  4. With long needle use cotton thread and make it like a bracelet

IMG-20160624-WA0033

Some make with gold and precious stones. It is not a must. But if you can, nothing wrong as long as the stones, gold are pure and craftsmanship is good, so that it does not cut or prick the skin of the baby, then it is good. There is a parent in our group, who is a retail jeweller. In case if you like to touch base with him. Do ping him in our whatsapp group directly. Below is the sample he uses it for kids.

Ancient Ways to Cleanse Colon Safely With Castor Oil

Learn the art of natural way to detox your stomach, bowel & colon to rejuvenate the digestive system.

16652033607_983f626b7b_z
There is always a heated discussion among our parents at our whatsapp group on what best to eat, but seldom discuss about how to remove the waste that we eat and accumulate in our system. At our recent webinar, we discussed in great detail and we came up with this blog.

It is often an assumption that what we eat is absorbed by the body and the waste is disposed in the form of urine and stool. Ideally that works for a healthy body. But most of the undigested food, now known as toxins are always stored inside our digestive system.  Did you know that the path from mouth to the anus is approx. 33ft? Yes, it is a long journey indeed!

Then these toxins take a permanent position in our body, disturbing our physical health, but mental and spiritual health as well. More the toxins we accumulate, more the health problems we may have to face. Most of the health problems can be easily avoided by basic detoxing method followed by our ancestors. Our ancient texts have given a lot of ways to remove this toxins regularly. It is an important duty to clean bowel, often!

There is a song by Thirumoolar, that says, yearly at least twice we have to clean our stomach. Given that Thirumoolar advised this 1000+ years ago; today, with junk and processed food, almost all the Siddha doctors advises to clean the stomach at least once in  4 months.

There are plenty of ways to do this. Here is a simple ancient technique.

5521716648_6ea0f36193_b

Ingredients
  1. 3 to 4 Teaspoon of Castor Oil (15ml – 20ml)
  2. 3 Teaspoon of Ginger juice (without skin) (15ml)
  3. 3 Teaspoon of Honey (15ml)
  4. 50 ML of warm water
A day before

Take light food at the night.

On the day

Make sure, you do not have any outdoor-activities on this day, as you might have to visit rest room very frequently.

This process has to performed in an empty stomach and early morning would be the best time. Mix castor oil, ginger juice, honey and water as per the proportion mentioned above. Depending on your body type, in next few mins or an hour, you might have to visit the restroom more than 3 to 6 times. Make sure your diet is warm water only.

The right time to stop this process is, when you notice the urine quantity is more than the stool, and the stool is in the color of plain water. Your body will tell you to stop it, then you can either take, some buttermilk with rock salt or lime juice with salt. It would stop the loose motion.

It is necessary not to eat or drink anything except warm water.

Once you stop it, give some time to rest your body. At noon, have liquid diet, with rasam or kanji. Later at dinner, have semisolid food. Next day, you can follow normal diet.

The quantity of Castor oil, Ginger, honey and so on, might not work for all, all the time. You can increase /decrease as per your needs.

This simple process, will detox the body and prevent from non-communicable disease such as cancer and so on.

You can buy pure castor oil and various types of herbs honey from our community store – HLP Store.

Reviving the food we eat.

Understand your body well, and take the food accordingly. A deep insight of “Food” we intake is actually, not just eating though mouth, but to balance between air, water and wholesome food.

Food is medicine – An old siddha saying.

Learn right food, we intake, quantity and quality to lead a healthy life! In our house, kitchen is our lab. We prepare medicine for hunger. In the ancient days, we lived a life what was in balance with nature.

As Nammalvar says, “Food should be local, seasonal, cost effective, chemical free and should posses micro and macro nutritious.” Today We have a huge list of food products that is chemically processed, it is now known fact that, these food only harms, but kills the person over time. If we switch to organic, it is costly. But if we dig deeper, we do not need expensive food ingredients to to lead a healthy lifestyle. With simple easy to find local food, we can lead a far better healthy life. Let us find out.

Before we explore the need to find a better intake. We need to under how much our body actually needs? The Food we eat, is *NOT* the only source for sustaining our life, rather it is one of the smallest contributor. Our ancients text have give a huge wisdom of what to eat, when to eat, what not to eat and so on.

For healthy life, We need the following

  1. 50% Air
  2. 30% Water
  3. 20% Food

Compared this with our present life style, which is, 40% food alone. Thus leads to imbalance in other two elements, Air and Water. So technically, we eat though, Nose (air), Skin (water) and Mouth (food).

Air – 50%

The we breath contributes a lot, Spiritual Scientist, thirumoolar says, we breath 21000 times. We need to breath in a rhyming pattern, easy, slow, longer and deeper!  We need to do at least, pranayama exercise (alternative nostril breathing) at least 21 times, morning and evening, More the better. There are tons technique to practice here. We can cover this in a later blog.

Water – 30%

The water mentioned here does not refer the water we consume, but rather, it is the moisture we absorb from atmosphere. Our body, absorb moisture from the root of hairs all over the body. That is why many ancient yogis do not cut hair. Waxing or removal of body hair, will block the pores at the skin and will stop us from taking water from atmosphere.

Food – 20%

It is the 20% that we eat, that includes water we drink! To know how much to eat, we need a benchmark to assess that quantity. So stomach is our tank to store this 20%. In 20% intake, that we consume thought mouth,

  1. ¼ is the food – This is what we actually eat!
  2. ¼ is water we drink
  3. ½ is air (or empty)

To balance the 20% intake, our ancestors always said to fast, so when we do not intake, 20% of food, then the 50% air and 30% water will increase in body. Fasting itself is a big topic by itself, again there is a lot confusing in the name of fasting, Many over kill their body with fasting, We will do a detailed blog about this in coming days.

There is another confusing about food and water intake, on whether should take water immediately after food or give 30 mins to drink water.

If you chow the food nicely and mix it saliva, then we do not need to take water. There is saying Tamil to chow every bit of the food up to 16 times. Today, with busy lifestyle, many gulp the food without grinding the food properly, in that case, you need to drink water immediately. Any Naturopathy or Traditional healers would say, drink the food, eat the water. The food we swallow, should be drinkable, until then keep on chewing, because, the digestion start right at the mouth to all way till end of anus, that is a 30m journey.

When we actually drink the food, that is processed at our mouth, you will realize a fact that, we should have eaten less, but you get a sense of filling with smaller quantity. Thus, this will lead to weight reduction easily. Try this for one week, Just 7 day, and see for it for yourself!

In coming blogs, we will share the what to eat, not to eat, should we buy expensive imported food? And so.

Ancient way to test the mother’s milk

By Ken Hammond ([1]) – USDA
It is amazing to see, how our ancestors were able to measure the quality of mothers milk with simple tools and balance their vata, pitta and kapha. In the olden days, the other would simple do the following test to product a healthy milk for their infants.

Few drops of milk is poured into a vessel containing water. Depending on the consistence of the milk, like the way it floats, settles, froths, striates and colours, the nature of the imbalance is understood.

Vata Dosha

The milk floats in water and froths. It may cause diarrhea.

Pitta Dosha

The Milk striates and displays yellow colour. It may cause neurological problems.

Kapha Dosha

The Milk feels heavy, slimy and settles at the bottom of the vessel. It may cause cough, respiratory problems, including indigestion and worms.

Balanced Dosha

Normally mixed well with water.

Therefore, it was well understood, the infants health is completely depends on the mothers feed. Hence mother have take proper balanced diet.

Useful Tips
  • Morning the mother can have a pinch of Pepper, long pepper and dried ginger (without skin) it is commonly called as Thrukadugu chroonam with little honey.
  • Evening the mother can have a pinch of Todikai, Amla and kadukkai, it is commonly known as Triphala.
  • If your shows a pitta or kapha doshas, then regular intake of 3 to 4 cups of pomegranate juice will help. people with Vata imbalance should avoid it.
  • Shatavari helps a lot to maintaining quality and quantity of milk.

Cosmic healing with birth stars and trees.

Energize your soul with nature’s greatest gift to mankind, trees!

Understanding the creation of this whole cosmos is a mystery. Scientists have gone too far in the recent times to give us various theories. Every time they discover a theory, it either supersedes or contradicts their past theory. If we go back in time, It is astonishing to see how yogis or siddhas gave us in-depth knowledge about the creation of universe through various texts/scripts/poems. There is lot of research about such questions going on in the scientific field currently. How our ancestors knew about it might sound mysterious, but if we dig deeper, we will know that it is through their mystic power acquired by their sadhana and various yogic practices such as meditation, astral travel, and so on.

Before we go to the Birth star and their respective trees, we need to understand the connection better. Once we know the meaning, the practice of hugging trees becomes meaningful.

There is a famous saying in siddha’s text “Andathil ullathu pindathil, pindathil ullathu andathil” Which means, whatever is in the cosmos is in our body, and whatever is in the body is in the cosmos. This is the fundamental fact our ancestors realized long ago.

Conception of Astrology

It is a known fact that all the living creatures are made of 5 elements of nature. They are fire, water, earth, air and space. Science says, we are all constantly influenced by heavenly bodies that surround us. Our ancient text clearly documents the fact that, nearest heavenly bodies such as planets and satellites affects us. The nearest bodies for us are, Moon, Sun, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, and two lunar nodes known as Ragu and Kethu.

We are also affected by moon and stars at night. It is at this time, the conception starts. The subtle vibrations and light that fall on our earth supports two things, creating new life form and healing those living and non-living creatures. These vibrations are changing continually, because the heavenly bodies are also moving in time. It is during such time, new forms of life are created and these life forms have their planetary and stars properties. This is where Astrology starts. At first, it was started to understand the nature of seasons, prediction of flood and famine and so on. Later, as more and more people meditated, understood the nature better, they also realised that all the living and non-living creatures are also affected. Thus, the concept of medical astrology was evolved.

Evolution of Medical Astrology

In the past, there were no sophisticated machines or techniques to scan our physical bodies. The healer who would either be a psychic or a mystic or an astrologer would simply look at the birth chart of the individual and tell us what issues we might face now or in the future. The treatment for the illness would be in the form of rituals, lifestyle changes or give the patients combination of herbs or gems.

For Example, for three people with the same mental problem, they might give one person a Moon stone, second person a panchagavya ghrita and for the third person, pranic healing and so on. Why there is so much difference? It is because our ancestors strongly believed to treat the source of a disease than the symptom. So the same illness might have originated at different levels for each patient and the treatment has to be issued wrt the planet where it has originated. In order to know more about the illness, we need to understand our bodies very well.

The physical body we see is just a one of the three layers, known as, Sthula Sharira. There are other two layers called as Sukshma also known by various name such as astral body, subtle body, pranic body or Linga sharira, where the mind and intellect resides, and finally, the causal body, our doorway to the higher consciousness.

Bridging Astronomy and Botany

Going back to the heavenly moving bodies and it influence on us, we need those healing energy heal our three layers of body from higher species, plants and trees!

We can confidently say trees are far more advanced than animals, based on scientific study done in recent time. Number of genes in an human DNA ranges from 20,000 – 25,000, whereas simple traditional rice has 46,000 – 55,000 genes in their DNA. Surprised!

Higher the genes, higher they have evolved, With common sense, we know that trees live longer than humans and they understand a lot more than we do about nature. In fact, there are trees which are 32,000 years old! The highest lifespan in an animal kingdom is only 300 years that of a tortoise.

Biologists believe that trees do not share the same origin as us.And we also now know that they are lot more intelligent than us having higher social skills. They understand our environment better and few can even dance with music ( this is demonstrated by Botanist Dr Pradit).Trees as they are more evolved than us, can understand us at all three levels of the body. There is an ancient tree called “Karpaga vruksham” or “Kalpavriksha” or “wish-fulfilling” tree which can move! Only nature knows how!!

Since trees are far advanced, they absorb more healing energy than anyone else. That is why our ancient texts are flooded with reference of siddhas or yogi who meditated under a tree and reaching nirvana or enlightened state.

  • Sage Durvasa and Adi Shankaracharya, meditated under the Kalpavriksha
  • Buddha meditated under Bodhi tree
  • Thirumoolar meditated under a banyan tree in Thiruvavaduthurai and wrote 3000 poems one poem in a year

The list is endless.

These enlightened souls, were able to identify various location, symbols, gems stones, and trees that would heal all the layers of the human body of a person born at a particular time.

They identified trees for 9 planets later they identified trees that would cover 30degree of the zodiac called as Rasi Trees, Later they identified 27 stars that affects us and their trees, and they even went further in each star to divide them into 4 parts called as padas and found its tree for respective pada. Hence, 27 x 4 = 108 trees.

In the olden days, they use take classes under the tree. Lucky were those who had the privilege to sit under a tree for their education. It is said, chanting under neem tree produces more powerful vibration, One of the ancient texts (vedas) quotes that neem tree was born while chanting a mantra or primordial sound with certain rituals..

Now, we know a little about trees, so how to do we seek their blessings? Again we have to go back in time to find those answers. In the olden days, when a baby is born, the father would consult a family astrologer to know what is the destiny of the baby and they would recommend a tree as the star tree and gemstones. That is why the activity of writing the birth chart was one the Samskara like swarnaprashana, tonsuring or ear piercing.

The father would then take a small portion of the umbilical cord and bury it and plant the star tree there. Later, we forgot this process, and they used to bury it in schools and temples. Why? They all had trees. Now, we completely lost our tradition.

That is why each temple in ancient times always had a tree. Or to put it right, they found the tree and build the temple around it. So that people who walk-in receives the healing energy. Also, these ancient temples always has a siddha or yogi samadhi. These trees would emit the blessing from those souls to us through trees. These temple trees are called as Sthala Vriksham. For example, the mango tree at the Ekambershwara Temple at Kancheepuram, also known to possess the energy of earth element (which is one of five elements of nature) is said to be 3000-3500 year old!

The mother would keep a vessel of water in silver or copper or gold near the baby’s head while sleeping, in morning time, they would pour the water to the birthday star plant. She would take her baby under the tree during day time to play with them. The plant that is just born out of baby’s entry into the world would produce healing energy for him and guide him in this dream and intuition.

In today’s busy lifestyle, it is hard to spend time with trees, esp if there is no trees near by.

It is necessary to spend time with our respective star-trees during our birthdays because birthdays (wrt star) is the weakest time in a person’s life and we when we are weak, we have to be in the safest place which is our birth tree!

Benefits from our Birth Trees

We can follow few steps when we are near our birth tree or any tree:

  • Always be in gratitude
  • Pour some water at its roots, thank them for their selfless healing energy they give without expecting anything from us. Before we take anything from tree, let us give something to them
  • Sit there and observe their beauty
  • Talk to them
  • Meditate under them
  • Hug them, let your heart touch the bark
  • Lie on the bark where all the chakras are in touch with the tree for direct healing
  • Protect them from intruders
  • Collect the seeds, and store it, When you meet someone with the same birth star, you can gift them the seeds
  • With permission, Take its small flower or leaves and retain with you in our bag or wallet. It will protect you in various ways, When the leaves are dry, go back and drop it at the same tree, so that they can sense and understand you better. There is a lot of spiritual science behind the process, which I will blog later

There are 108 trees in total for 27 nakshatras and for each of the 4 padas of a nakshatra. Some of the trees are very rare and hard to find, so we have also listed 27 trees for each nakshatra, that would cover all the 4 padas for that particular nakshatra. You can use, either or both of the trees as per the proximity. More than finding one, try to plant one!

Given below is a place at Pondicherry, which not only has all 27 trees / nakshatra, but also 12 trees as per Rasi, 9 trees as per planets, and 60 trees for each Tamil Year cycle. We will continue to find those hidden place and update the blog.

We might not have details regarding all the trees but we are in constant process to update the details. If you know more about trees, please do share it with us. There are usually more than 1 tree for a star – let us not restrict ourselves with the false concept of one tree per star or pada. We will later share the trees/plants wrt to Rasi also.

Special thanks to members and parents:

Feel free to join him for meet like-minded people and find your trees near by. He is also actively running an activity on stargazing for parents and their kids. For more info check this here

Karnavedham, an ear piercing ceremony.

Try this with the help of someone at home. Close your eyes try to walk into kitchen and drink a glass of water. You will appreciate the value of our eyes, and how lucky we all are. It is not good to see many young kids with spectacles these days.

Sailors play pin the tail on the donkey.

When we explore our ancient text, it is very clearly stated that ear piercing at an early stage has significant effects on eyes. This practices is popularly known as Karnavedha. According to ancient spiritual people, a person’s ear is the key element to measure this spiritual quotient, intelligence and brainpower, no wonder why buddha has large ears. They would have probably made this comment because of their exceptional knowledge on planetary effects on human body. An expert Astrologer also would agree, that Ragu in a malefic position will make the person miser and that person would have a smaller ear contradicting to this is larger ear means spiritual in nature.

aaradhana

Our siddhas or spiritual scientists were by default experts in human anatomy and documented it in “Samuthirga lakshana”. They were able to see certain points in body could enhance the health of body, mind and soul. One of the prominent Siddha by name Thirumoolar mentioned that, there is 72000 nadis (can be equated to nerves in modern medical system) in human body. Out of this, he classified 10 most important nadis as dasa nadi. Athithi and Alampudai represents nerve of right and left ears. Which influence in triggering intellect, power of thinking and decision making capabilities. Talkativeness fritters away life energy. Ear piercing helps in speech-restraint. It helps to reduce impertinent behaviour and the ear-channels become free from disorders, apart from the big package, it plays a major role in immunity, better eyesight and alertness. That’s the reason sailors who visited india would pierce their ears to improve the eyesight.   It is strongly believed that Indian Siddha’s anatomical knowledge reached china and later evolved into acupressure and acupuncture. Today, it is one of the known and proven alternative medical practice for various chronic illness.

As always, our forefathers prescribed this practice for medical and spiritual reasons. Over period of time, this was integrated in various religion as one of the sixteen samskaras. Now, it has taken as a fashion statement.

similitud

In addition, reports mention how children with learning disabilities such as Down’s Syndrome, developmental and cognitive problems like ADHD/ADD reported an increase in performance and became more active in the class. Apparently, pinching the ear lobes has an acupuncture effect that helps. It is believed it gets rid of hysteria and other diseases and maintains the flow of electric current in our body.

They used Gold metal for its spiritual value and of course it never rusts. Birthstones was embedded into the earing to enhance their aura. As majority of the sense are in the head, wearing a birthstone as ear ring made a lot of sense. Mrigasheersham star is the best do an ear piercing.

So ear piercing alone will not improve the eyesight, it will enhance. Apart from that, “SCHOOL FOR PERFECT EYESIGHT“ at  Sri Aurobindo Ashram is providing a noble service for improving eye sights. If you or your kid have power in eyes, do make it a point to undergo this treatment.

The treatment is free, one may donate accoding to their own wish.
